Iranwire – An Iranian protester who endured months of torture while in custody is hospitalized in Türkiye in a “critical” health condition, waiting for a liver transplant, her sister says.

Elham Modarresi was arrested a year ago for participating in anti-establishment protests that swept the country following the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, activists say.

After months of imprisonment, during which she was subjected to physical and psychological torture, and threats to her family, Modarresi was forced to leave Iran, and is now in Türkiye for medical care.

She was recently rushed to a hospital’s intensive care unit with “extreme blood loss,” her sister Nahid said in a video posted on the social media platform X.

“We have been shouting for three months that Elham is in a critical physical condition,” Nahid said. “She needs an immediate transfer to a hospital that is able to conduct a liver transplant.”

“I implore you; it’s about her life and death; please do something for her.”

fundraiser launched last month on the online platform GoFundMe to help pay for Modarresi’s medical bills has attracted donations totalling more than $42,000 – nearly half the $90,000 goal.

X users can show support by using the hashtag #ElhamModarresi.

More than 500 people were killed by security forces and over 20,000 were unlawfully detained during the monthslong protests demanding fundamental changes in Iran.

Following biased trials, the judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty, to protesters. Seven of them have been executed so far.
