Activist Arrested During Educators Rally In Iran

iranintl – A Bushehr Teachers Union member, Reza Amanifar, was arrested as Iranian educators took to the streets on Thursday to address the country’s education crisis.

The demonstration followed the Coordination Council of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations’ call for a nationwide rally.

Also yesterday, Esmaeil Abdi, a teacher, civil activist, and member of the Iranian Teachers’ Trade Union who has been arrested and imprisoned for his union activities on multiple occasions, was summoned by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence.

Iranian educators have long been campaigning to raise their salaries and pensions since they are among the lowest-paid government employees. Government officials embezzled millions of dollars from their pension fund during the 2010s without severe consequences.

The Islamic Republic has long used force and intimidation against teachers who have pursued their demands peacefully and legally for two decades, and arrests and harsh prison sentences have increased recently.
