Iranwire – Further diminishing Iran’s press freedom, the Islamic Republic has prosecuted at least 91 journalists, media activists, and media outlets in the first quarter of 2024.
Defending Free Flow of Information, a non-profit advocating for freedom of expression, reports that at least 12 journalists and media activists were subjected to arbitrary arrests during this period.
Three were imprisoned, while nine were summoned by judicial or security institutions.
Additionally, security forces raided a journalist’s home, and another media outlet’s assets were confiscated.
The report also revealed that a news agency fired a photographer for criticizing the government.
As many as 24 journalists and media managers, including seven women and 17 men, were sentenced to a cumulative 14 years and seven months in prison, various bans, including doing journalism, social media, and leaving the country, and exile in some cases.
The report emphasized that these figures likely represent an undercount, as they only reflect documented and verified cases.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also identified Iran as the sixth-worst jailer of journalists globally in January 2024, following China, Myanmar, Belarus, Russia, and Vietnam.
