Iranian National Arrested in Peru for Alleged Plot to Attack APEC Summit

Iranwire – Peruvian authorities arrested Iranian national Majid Azizi on March 6 on charges of plotting a terrorist attack on the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) summit.

According to the Peruvian Police's Counter-Terrorism Directorate, he was collaborating with two Peruvian citizens for the planned attack, but only Azizi has been apprehended so far

Azizi was arrested after he withdrew money from a bank in Peru’s capital, Lima.

Peruvian police kept specific details regarding the targeted APEC summit undisclosed.

Peru is responsible for organizing over 160 meetings throughout 2023 and 2024 as part of its hosting duties for APEC.

This incident marks the second time in recent years that Iran has been implicated in potential attacks in Peru.

In 2014, Peruvian authorities detained a suspected operative of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group in Lima on suspicion of planning attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets.
