Iranian Political Prisoner On Hunger Strike to Protest Lack of Medical Care

Iranwire – Iranian political prisoner Zohreh Sarv has been on a hunger strike for four days in protest at the authorities denying adequate medical care.

In a letter sent from Tehran’s Evin prison, Sarv says she will consume only "water, sugar and salt," and holds the judiciary responsible for any consequences to her health and life that may result from her hunger strike launched on November 23

In a letter sent from Tehran’s Evin prison, Sarv says she will consume only “water, sugar and salt,” and holds the judiciary responsible for any consequences to her health and life that may result from her hunger strike launched on November 23.

She also points out that she should be released on parole after serving more than a third of her sentence.

Reports indicate that the prison authorities have prevented her from receiving hospital treatment for a meniscus tear for several weeks.

Sarv has been serving a six-year prison term since October 2021 on charges of “gathering, colluding and propaganda against the system.”

She is the only caretaker of her 75-year-old mother, who is unable to leave the house due to her old age and a hip fracture. The old woman is attended to by a nurse during her daughter’s imprisonment.

The two have not been able to meet for 27 months.

Over the past decades, many political prisoners in Iran have suffered from serious medical complications caused by hunger strikes, and some have lost their lives.
