Thousands of Iranian University Professors Dismissed

Iranwire – Since the beginning of the academic year in Iran, there has been an increased security presence in universities, stricter enforcement of gender segregation on campuses and a growing number of professors being dismissed.

Etemad newspaper reported on October 12 the dismissal of 32,000 tenured professors at Islamic Azad University, which has many branches across the country.

It said that 20,000 doctoral students were granted professorships to replace them after completing a 40-hour training program. These students are set to benefit from reduced tuition fees.

Etemad’s report stated that the dismissal process began in September under a decision of the university’s president, Mehdi Tehranchi.

Many university professors have been expelled, suspended, banned from teaching and arrested over the past year for protesting increased security measures in campuses during nationwide protests, or for supporting student demonstrations.

Meanwhile, Amirkabir University’s Telegram channel reported that women and men for the first time attended this year’s welcome ceremony separately.

Female students were placed in the university’s Movlana Hall, while men were at the exhibition site.

Earlier, the Sharif Today Telegram channel, which covers news related to Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, announced that gender segregation was imposed in study halls at the Faculty of Energy.

The Telegram channel reported that students protested the decision in handwritten protest letters and held a sit-in protest in the lobby on October 9, holding placards reading “Your solutions are our problems” and “No to gender segregation.”
