Jailed Iranian Activist Mohammadi Beaten in Prison Hospital

Iranwire – Prominent human rights activist and political prisoner Narges Mohammadi was verbally abused and beaten by a staff member of Tehran’s Evin prison, witnesses told IranWire.

The incident occurred on September 11 as Mohammadi was visiting the prison’s hospital.

A prison officer called Mohammadi “insane” in front of several other officials and beat her after she responded to the remark.

Following the attack, Mohammadi was taken away in an ambulance and presumably brought back to the women’s ward of Evin prison.

Mohammadi has been harassed, arrested and imprisoned many times for her activism.

She was most recently arrested in 2022 and subsequently sentenced to 10 years 9 months in prison on multiple fabricated charges.

While serving her sentence in Evin prison, Mohammadi consistently used her voice to advocate for fellow political prisoners and highlight horrific conditions inside prisons.

The outspoken activist has received many awards and accolades, including the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize and the Andrei Sakharov Prize of the American Physical Society.
