Crowd Gather At Iranian Prison To Protest “Imminent Executions”

Iranwire – Hundreds of people gathered outside a prison in the northern Iranian city of Karaj overnight in an attempt to prevent the reported imminent execution of two young protesters.

The opposition activist collective 1500tasvir reported that Mohammad Baroghani and Mohammad Ghobadlou were transferred to solitary confinement at Rejaei Shahr prison, which is often a preliminary step before execution.

The Islamic Republic hanged two men on January 7 amid international outrage, bringing to four the number of people executed so far in connection with the ongoing nationwide protest movement.

Ghobadlou was sentenced to death for allegedly killing a police officer by running a car over him, while Baroghani was accused of setting fire to a government building and wounding an official.

Footage posted on social media showed the protesters outside Rejaei Shahr prison in the early hours of January 9, chanting “I will kill whoever kills my brother” and “This is the final warning; there will be a rebellion if you execute.”

Ghobadlou’s mother, who was among the demonstrators, said it had been established that her son had not been at the scene when the police officer died.

The country has been swept by demonstrations since the September 16 death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of morality police.

Security forces have killed more than 500 people and arrested over 18,000 others in the brutal crackdown on the protests, which have grown into one of the most serious challenges to the theocracy installed by the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
