Former Tehran University Student Sentenced to Prison for “Propaganda”

Iranwire – Khashayar Sefidi, a 32-year-old former master’s student in music at the Tehran University of Art, has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Revolutionary Court in Tehran.

Khashayar Safidi, a 32-year-old former master's student in music at the Tehran University of Art, has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Revolutionary Court in Tehran

The verdict, issued on July 2 and sent to Sefidi’s lawyer, found him guilty of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic.”

The court proceedings, which took place over two sessions on May 27 and June 30, addressed charges of propaganda and allegations of “spreading false information about the death of Nika Shakarami,” a victim of the 2022 nationwide protests in Iran.

Sefidi, however, maintained in a video statement that he had not posted anything regarding Shakarami on his personal page.

The propaganda charge stems from Sefidi’s three-day sit-in strike supporting rapper Toomaj Salehi, although further details about this protest were not provided. Known for his protest music, Salehi was handed the death sentence, which was later overturned by the Supreme Court in June.

On May 2, Safidi was summoned to branch 3 of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Tehran.

After appearing and being informed of the charges against him, he was released on bail.

This legal action follows Safidi’s expulsion from the Tehran University of Art last year.

Before his expulsion, he had been temporarily suspended for one term by the university’s disciplinary committee.
