Four Inmates Die Under Mysterious Circumstances in Shiban Prison

Iranwire – Four prisoners in Ward 3 of the Shiban prison in southern Ahvaz have died under unknown circumstances, while fifteen others have been transferred to an outside hospital.

Prison authorities have remained silent about the cause of the deaths and have not released any information about the condition of the hospitalized inmates.

The human rights organization Karun reported that Ward 3 of Shiban prison primarily houses individuals accused of theft and drug-related offenses.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the incident may have been caused by the administration of incorrect medications, leading to poisoning. However, this information has not been verified by official sources.

Housing over 5,000 inmates, well past its designed capacity of 3,500, it has gained notoriety as one of the country’s most perilous prisons.

Shiban prison, close to major Iranian oil fields, is notorious for its appalling health standards and the harsh treatment of prisoners.

Ahmadreza Azadeh serves as its head, having previously held management positions in other prisons such as Dezful, and Behbahan, and as deputy of the former Karun prison in Ahvaz.

The prison has nine wards, including two large halls designated as the 6th and 7th wards with about 1,700 individuals in each of the large halls.
