Iran Court Sentences Arab Civil Rights Activist to One Year in Jail

Iranwire – Ebrahim Elhaei, a 54-year-old Arab civil rights activist from Ahvaz was sentenced to one year in prison.

His detention was extended in October, and he was eventually released temporarily on November 5, 2023, while awaiting the outcome of his trial

The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights reported that Branch 3 of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court convicted Elhaei of charges including “insulting Ali Khamenei,” “membership in anti-government organizations,” and “propaganda against the Islamic Republic.”

Elhaei’s ordeal began on September 3, 2023, when the Ministry of Intelligence arrested him at Ahvaz airport. 

His detention was extended in October, and he was eventually released temporarily on November 5, 2023, while awaiting the outcome of his trial.
