Iranian Artist Arrested on Blasphemy Charges, Refuses Bail in Protest

Iranwire – Iranian artist and activist Atena Farghadani was arrested on April 13, 2024, by security forces and reportedly transferred to Qarchak Prison in Varamin.

This is not the first time Farghadani has been arrested. On June 7, 2023, she was detained at the Evin Prosecutor's office and held in Gharchak Prison for "disturbing public order" and later released on bail

Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) cited a source close to her family who said Farghadani refused bail in protest. 

HRANA also reports allegations of physical violence upon her arrest, resulting in visible facial injuries.

Farghadani faces charges of “blasphemy,” “disturbing public order,” and “propaganda against the Islamic Republic.”
