Iran’s Special Forces Raid Political Inmates’ Ward in Notorious Prison

Iranwire – The special forces of the Islamic Republic have raided the political inmates’ ward at a prison in southern Iran.

Human rights groups in Iran report that on Tuesday, April 10, special forces raided Ward 5 of Ahvaz Central Prison, also known as Shiban Prison.

The ward is designated for political prisoners.

The raid involved violent destruction of personal belongings, refrigerators, and beds belonging to the prisoners.

According to reports received by the human rights organization Karun, guard forces carried out the attack on the order of Mohammad Niazi, the director of the prison’s interior department.

Housing over 5,000 inmates, well past the prison’s designed capacity of 3,500, Shiban has gained notoriety as one of the country’s most unsafe prisons.

An investigation by IranWire has unearthed troubling details regarding the persistence of archaic torture methods at the prison.

Practices reminiscent of the 1980s – such as the infamous “coffin,” in which inmates are held in coffins – continue to be used by guards.
