Elderly Political Prisoner Sentenced to Death for “Insulting Prophet”

Iranwire – The Tehran Criminal Court has sentenced Shahriar Bayat, a 64-year-old political prisoner, to death on charges of allegedly “insulting the prophet of Islam.”

Bayat’s family confirmed the March 24 verdict when he was on the final day of his furlough from Evin prison, according to the HRANA human rights news agency.

The ruling was issued by Branch 13 of the Tehran Criminal Court. 

Bayat’s wife, Nahid, is currently in poor health and is unable to inquire about her husband’s legal proceedings.

Bayat is undergoing legal proceedings in both Criminal and Revolutionary Courts. 

The Criminal Court convicted him of “insulting the prophet of Islam, Shia Imams, and other Islamic sanctities through the publication of pictures and posts on social media.”

Shahriar Bayat’s legal ordeal started on September 25, 2022, when he was arrested by security forces from his residence during nationwide protests.
