Azerbaijan Seizes Drugs from Iran, Arrests Iranian Citizen

Iranwire – Azerbaijani police and border guards launched a series of operations and confiscated hundreds of kilograms of drugs smuggled from Iran and apprehended numerous individuals, including an Iranian citizen.

The Ministry of Interior of Azerbaijan reported over ten drug shipment seizures from Iran in the past ten days.

On Sunday, a clash erupted between Azerbaijani border guards and drug smugglers during an operation in the Horadiz border region.

According to reports, Iranian national Ramazan Adeli was arrested after injuring a border guard with a weapon. 

Two Azerbaijani citizens were also arrested with him, alongside over 10 kilograms of narcotics.

In another incident, the Azerbaijani police seized 60 kilograms of drugs smuggled from Iran in the border city of Astara and the Qaradagh district near Baku.

The Ministry of Interior announced that over 50 individuals were arrested on drug trafficking and sales charges over the past two weeks. 

Additionally, roughly 310 kilograms of drugs and thousands of psychotropic pills originating from Iran were confiscated at the same time. 

These operations spanned across Azerbaijan, from the Iranian border regions to central areas and Baku’s suburbs.

The Azerbaijani police have announced the seizure of more than two tons of narcotics and psychotropic substances from Iran since the beginning of 2024.
