Global Student Forum Condemns Iran’s Suppression of Student Activists

Iranwire – The Global Student Forum (GSF) has denounced the Iranian government’s suppression of student activities and violation of academic freedoms.

The imprisonment of Ali Ramezani, an award-winning electrical engineering student at Amirkabir University, has attracted strong condemnation by GSF of such persecutions by the Islamic Republic.

“The GSF condemns this suppression of peaceful student activism and violation of academic freedoms, as evidenced by the actions taken against Ali Ramezani and countless others,” the GSF said in a statement issued on March 23.

In October 2023, authorities arrested Ramezani at his home.

Last month, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced him to three years and seven months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic” and “gathering and collusion against security.”

The GSF’s statement reproached the harassment Ramezani faced for advocating student rights, peace, and freedom in Iran.

Highlighting the “dangerous conditions faced by student activists in Iran,” the organization demanded Ramezani’s immediate release and urged Iranian authorities to respect students’ right to free expression and the autonomy of educational institutions.

Ramezani’s case is not isolated; other elite students, including Computer Engineering gold medalist Ali Younesi and Physics silver medalist Amirhossein Moradi – both Olympiad champions in Astronomy, have also been imprisoned.

The Global Student Forum is an international organization comprising unions of school and university students worldwide.
