Iran says killed two ‘terrorists’ planning suicide bombings in southeast

Al-Arabia – Iran said on Sunday its security forces killed two “terrorists” who were planning to carry out suicide bombings in the country’s restive southeast.

A local security official told state media that the two people were killed in the city of Saravan after being pursued by security forces.

The official said that the two individuals were carrying explosives intended for the planned attacks. No further details were reported.

Saravan is located in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan and has a history of clashes between security forces and Sunni militants, as well as drug smugglers.

The province is one of Iran’s poorest regions and is mostly populated by Sunni ethnic Baluchis, a minority in predominantly Shia Iran.

On Wednesday, a police officer was killed in an attack on a police station in the province claimed by Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice), a local Sunni militant group formed in 2012 and designated as a “terrorist” organization by Tehran.

The same group had also claimed a similar attack in Sistan-Baluchistan on December 15, where at least 11 policemen were killed.

Earlier this month, twin suicide bombings in the city of Kerman during a memorial ceremony for slain Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani killed over 90 people. ISIS claimed responsibility for those attacks.
