Iran’s Powdered Milk Shortage: The Numbers Don’t Add Up!

Iranwire – As the Iranian population has faced shortages of powdered milk in recent months, publicly available data show that the supplies are 20 to 30 percent higher than the demand, according to new research by Iran Open Data (IOD).

The collaborative initiative cites statistics from Iran’s Association of Powdered Milk Producers as indicating that the country produced 200,000 to 240,000 tons of the product in the past year

The collaborative initiative cites statistics from Iran’s Association of Powdered Milk Producers as indicating that the country produced 200,000 to 240,000 tons of the product in the past year.

And according to the Customs Administration, around 106,000 tons of powdered milk were exported, while approximately 1,213 tons were imported.

Meanwhile, officials have claimed that the domestic consumption is less than 60,000 tons per year.

These figures suggest a supply surplus of 35,000 to 75,000 tons, which are unaccounted for.

Iran Open Data says this surplus might be “stashed away in warehouses or smuggled out of the country.”
