Iranian Authorities Put Ex-Student Activist Abdi on Trial

Iranwire – An Iranian former student rights activist has gone on trial on charges of  “propaganda against the system,” “collusion” and “promotion of corruption,” IranWire has learned.

Ali Abdi, an ex-member of the Sharif University of Technology Islamic Association of Students, returned to Iran on June 22 following 14 years of exile

Ali Abdi, an ex-member of the Sharif University of Technology Islamic Association of Students, returned to Iran on June 22 following 14 years of exile. 

Before his arrest, he participated in discussions on the popular social networking platform Clubhouse.

He was also involved in the 2006 One Million Signatures Campaign to repel gender-discriminatory laws.

Before his return to Iran, he had traveled to Afghanistan to work on his doctoral thesis but had to leave the country after the Taliban returned to power in 2021. 

He earned his master’s degree in gender studies in Budapest, Hungary, and pursued a doctorate in anthropology at Yale University in the United States.
