Iranian Activist Najafi Starts Prison Sentence

Iranwire – Iranian authorities have summoned Hamidreza Najafi, a well-known civil activist and entrepreneur in central Markazi province, to serve an eight-month prison sentence.

Najafi reported to Arak Central Prison, near Tehran, on November 29 to begin his sentence

Najafi reported to Arak Central Prison on November 29 to begin his sentence.

In a brief message sent to IranWire, the activist stated, “Document today’s Iran and share with the world. The story of mothers, fathers, wives, and children sending their young to prison.”

“They have fabricated five cases against me in just two months,” he added.

Najafi was arrested in Arak on September 17, coinciding with the first anniversary of anti-establishment protests that rocked Iran for months, and was later released on bail pending the issuance of a verdict.

He was initially sentenced to three years in prison on charges of “inciting people to fight and kill each other” and “propaganda against the Islamic Republic system.”

Earlier this month, an appeals court acquitted him of the first charge and reduced his sentence to eight months.

In another case, Najafi was sentenced to 15 months in prison for “spreading lies,” but the final verdict in this case has not yet been delivered.

An informed source told IranWire that security agencies have targeted Najafi for his social media posts in which he criticized the government’s economic and social policies.
