Iranwire – Iranian intelligence agents have arrested Ayat Mehr Ali Beiglo, a prominent Azeri political activist and former political prisoner, IranWire has learned.
Agents of the Tabriz Intelligence Department apprehended Mehr Ali Beiglou on November 7 at an auto repair shop where he had brought his car for servicing.
The agents had compelled the repair shop’s owner to call the activist. Mehr Ali Beiglo was arrested upon his arrival at the location.
Over the past two decades, Mehr Ali Beiglo has been arrested and imprisoned on numerous occasions for his activism.
In 2012, he was arrested alongside several other Azeri civil activists, was subjected to months of solitary confinement during which he was subjected to severe physical and psychological torture, and was sentenced following an fair trial to nine years in prison.
The activist was released from Tabriz prison in March 2017 after more than five years of incarceration in deplorable conditions.
