Iran Urged to Release Jailed Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Mohammadi

Iranwire – UN experts have called for the immediate release of imprisoned human rights advocate Narges Mohammadi, who was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize last week.

“We are dismayed that Iranian authorities continue to deprive Ms. Mohammadi of her liberty, despite concerns about her deteriorating health in detention, against the advice of medical professionals, in violation of their obligations under international human rights law,” the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention said on October 11.

On October 6, the Nobel Committee announced that Mohammadi was being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight against the “oppression of women” in her country.

Mohammadi has been imprisoned multiple times over the past decade for her civil rights activities. She was most recently arrested in 2022 and sentenced to 10 years 9 months in prison on fabricated charges.

The outspoken activist has published numerous letters protesting conditions in Tehran’s Evin prison, where she is incarcerated, and violence against inmates.

Previously, the UN Working Group determined that Mohammadi’s detention is arbitrary and called for her immediate release, compensation and reparations.

“It is deeply regrettable that despite calls by the UN and the international community, Iranian authorities continue to criminalise Narges Mohammadi for her work in defence of human rights,” the experts said in their latest statement.
