The Iranian judiciary has overturned the death sentence of 23-year-old protester Mohammad Qobadloo, his lawyer says, after the convict sent a distressing message from prison

“The sentence of Mohammad Qobadloo was overturned by Branch 1 of the Supreme Court,” Lawyer Amir Raisian said on his Twitter account on July 26.

“The case will now be referred back to the same branch to address matters related to my client’s mental health and to issue a new verdict,” he added.

Qobadloo is accused of running over a member of the security forces named Farid Karampour during last year’s nationwide protests.

“Every moment I feel the roughness of the rope around my neck,” the prisoner said in a written message shared by his mother.

“I never intended to take anyone’s life. I didn’t even see his face,” he added, referring to Karampour.
