Ahmad Nikouyi Executed for Adultery in Karaj

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) – Ahmad Nikouyi, a man sentenced to death for adultery, has been executed in Karaj Penitentiary. Though Iranian law proscribes stoning for adultery, a punishment last carried out in 2010 after international pressure raised the political cost of its use. Those sentenced to stoning are secretly executed by hanging instead.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Rajai Shahr (Gohardasht) Prison on April 24. His identity has been established as 37-year-old Ahmad Nikouyi who was sentenced to death for adultery.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Ahmad Nikouyi was sentenced to death for charges of having sexual relations with a married woman. He was transferred to the gallows from Ward 7 of Karaj Prison.”

No information is available about the married woman in the case.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

In 2022, at least 582 people including 16 women and three juvenile offenders were executed in Iran. Only 12% (71) were reported by official sources.
