Iranian Journalist Seif-Ali “Arbitrarily” Re-Arrested

Iranwire – The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is calling on Iranian authorities to immediately release journalist Saeed Seif-Ali and drop any charges against him.

Seif-Ali was previously detained on January 7 and was released on bail after eight days

“Authorities must let members of the press do their work without fear that they will be subject to arbitrary arrest and detention,” Sherif Mansour, the New York-based media freedom watchdog’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, said in a statement on April 17.

News reports quoted the journalist’s wife Asal Ismaeilzadeh as saying that Seif-Ali, editor-in-chief of the state-run news website Didbaniran.ir, was summoned to court on April 11 to meet with a judge about a previous arrest.

CPJ said it was unable to determine where he is being held or whether any charges have been filed against him.

Seif-Ali was previously detained on January 7 and was released on bail after eight days.

According to CPJ, Iranian authorities have arrested at least 95 journalists since September 2022, when the death in morality-police custody of a 22-year-old woman sparked nationwide protests.

Didbaniran.ir covered those protests and journalists’ arrests at the time
