Well-Known Kurdish Labor Activist Arrested In Iran

Iranwire – Iranian authorities have detained a prominent Kurdish labor activist and transferred him to a detention center of the Ministry of Intelligence, IranWire has learned.

The reason behind Esmaili's arrest and the charges he is facing have not been disclosed

Osman Esmaili was arrested in the northwestern city of Saqqez on February 8 without a judicial warrant.

Branch 3 of the Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Saqqez told the family he was being held at the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention center in Sanandaj, the capital of Kurdistan province, for further interrogation.

The reason behind Esmaili’s arrest and the charges he is facing have not been disclosed.

He is well-known among Saqqez residents and the labor community, having participated in nationwide protests and having supported the families of political prisoners.

Esmaili was previously arrested in 2014 and 2021 and once spent 12 days in solitary confinement.

In 2015, he was sentenced to one year in prison for participating in a gathering marking International Labor Day.
