Tehran Protesters Outraged Over First Execution Linked To Unrest

Iranwire – Angry Iranians have taken to the streets of the Iranian capital to protest the first known execution connected to the demonstrations that have swept the country for more than 12 weeks.

Mohsen Shekari was executed by hanging on December 8 for allegedly stabbing a member of the paramilitary Basij force at a September demonstration in the capital, state media reported.

According to reports and images received by IranWire, Tehran residents gathered in Chitgar area on the evening of December 8 to call on all Iranians to join the nationwide protests against the Islamic Republic regime.

“Why did you sit down? You are your own savior”, they chanted.

The slogans “Freedom, Freedom,” “I will kill whoever killed my brother”, and “Death to the dictator”, in reference to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, were heard in Sattar Khan area.

“We don’t want a baby-killer government, we don’t want it”, demonstrators chanted in Ekbatan neighborhood.

Iran is one of the world’s top executioners.

Activists say at least 11 people so far have been handed capital punishment over their involvement in the protest movement triggered by the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of morality police.

The security forces’ brutal crackdown on the protests has killed more than 440 people, including dozens of children, according to human rights groups. Thousands of people have also been detained.
