Iranwire – At least 175,000 people participated in anti-government protests across the country by mid October, and the average age of those arrested by police was 17, according to a confidential government report obtained by IranWire.
The report, which was handed to security officials and some government media managers, says police arrested 2,000 demonstrators and released 1,700 of them by the middle of this month. About 90 percent of them had never been taken to police custody before.
Those arrested were interrogated for an average of about 10 minutes, and most of them said they were protesting to “overthrow” the Islamic Republic, the report says.
Many told their interrogators: “We have nothing to lose.”
The September 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of Tehran’s morality police has triggered a wave of nationwide demonstrations against Iran’s clerical establishment.
Security services have unleashed a fierce crackdown on the mainly peaceful protests, killing at least 253 people, including 34 children, according to one human rights organization.
Several thousand people have been arrested and interrogated by police and other security forces.
Despite the brutal crackdown on protests, the government report predicted that the unrest would continue.
