2,000 detainees under torture in Greater Tehran Penitentiary

Iran-HRM – At least 2,000 detainees have been transferred by Iran’s Judiciary to the 6th Brigade of Greater Tehran Penitentiary with the start of nationwide uprisings in Iran. The Penitentiary also known as Fashafouyeh, is one of the most notorious prisons in Iran and one of the largest. The Penitentiary, 32 kilometers south of Tehran, covers an area of 110 hectares.

Among the 2,000 detainees, many are suffering serious injuries they encountered due to severe beatings by Iranian security agents or have been hit by pellet bullets. The 2,000 detainees require urgent and specialized treatment that must be provided for them. But the 2,000 detainees of recent protests in Iran have not received any medical treatment and instead face further torture that endangers their lives.

The Greater Tehran Penitentiary lacks both minimum living and health facilities. Detainees and political prisoners are transferred to this prison to be persecuted by authorities. Upon arrival, the prisoners are ruthlessly beaten and humiliated. Sick prisoners in Fashafouyeh are doomed to gradual death.

Upon the tragic reports of torturing prisoners in Kahrizak Prison in 2009, Iran HRM warns of repeating crimes committed by the Iranian authorities.
