Iranwire – Jailed human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has refused to appear before the Revolutionary Court to answer fresh charges levelled against her while she was in prison.
Mohammadi was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for “propaganda against the regime” last May. She had spoken publicly about her experiences of torture and sexual abuse by guards during her previous incarceration from May 2015 to October 2020.
This January, after a five-minute trial with no lawyer, she was sentenced to an additional eight years and two months in prison and 74 lashes for “collusion to act against national security” and “disrupting public order”.
During a medical furlough for heart surgery in March this year, Mohammadi had written on Instagram: “I do not recognise the system of religious totalitarianism, anti-justice courts, anti-human rights laws, and repressive court rulings.”
IranWire understands fresh charges were levelled against Mohammadi by Evin Prosecutor’s Office in early September.
On Wednesday, her lawyer Mostafa Nili wrote on Twitter: “This morning, Evin prison officials informed Ms. Mohammadi she should Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court based on the summons issued. She did not due to [the court’s] non-observance of notification procedures and her lack of access to a lawyer.”
In April Mohammadi was rearrested in a sudden raid on her home along with the photographer and women’s rights defender Alieh Motallebzadeh, despite the fact that she was on furlough and a contact had posted collateral bail.
