IranWire Exclusive: Unseen Photos of Neda Agha-Soltan’s Funeral

Iranwire – Thirteen years ago this week, the body of 26-year-old student Neda Agha-Soltan was laid to rest at Behesht-e Zahra Cemetery. The young woman was fatally shot in the chest on July 20, 2009 after attending pro-democracy protests in Tehran with her music teacher, in the aftermath of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s disputed re-election as president of Iran. Her horrific death was captured on video and became iconic in the struggle of the Green Movement.

These never-before-seen images, provided to IranWire by our friends at Middle East Images, show the scenes on the day of her burial that week. From urban youth to day laborers to clerics, an entire cross-section of Iranian society can be seen grieving for Neda Agha-Soltan and throwing roses on her grave. The collective rage toward those members of the security forces present is also clear.
