Ahwazi Arab man killed by border police in southwest Iran

Iran-HRM – The state security forces shot and killed an Ahwazi Arab man in the city of Hoveyzeh, southwest Iran.

Mohammad Obaidawi

On January 12, security forces shot and killed Mohammad Obaidawi on suspicion of smuggling weapons in Hoveyzeh, Khuzestan Province.

According to local sources, after killing the citizen, security forces did not find any weapons with him.
Obaidawi’s family received his body two days later on condition of a signed commitment not to file any complaint and to accept the accusation of smuggling weapons.

According to Khakzadegan, a local Arab Telegram channel, Mohammad Obaidawi, 42, was married, the father of five children, and a resident of Sariyeh village in Susangard.

According to local sources, bird hunting, fishing, buffalo farming and the sale of livestock are some of the occupations of the residents of Hoveyzeh.

Locals say security forces directly target and kill the residents in Hur Hoveyzeh without being held accountable.
Khakzadegan reported that during the mourning ceremony for Mohammad Obaidawi, the people of the region strongly protested against the systematic killings carried out by armed government forces.

“These killings must be stopped,” said a relative of Muhammad Obaidawi. “Why is our blood so cheap? No one takes responsibility, instead, they accuse us to justify the murder of our loved ones.”

The Iranian regime’s amed forces, shoot, kill, or injure ranchers, fuel carriers, and porters in border towns without being held accountable.

All the while, due to the lack of job opportunities, people are forced to earn a living through jobs such as hunting or buying and selling livestock.

Iranian authorities often attempt to justify their deadly force used by security forces by claiming without evidence that the forces were confronting “thugs” or “dangerous suspects.”

There are almost daily reports of police and border guards opening fire on Kurd border porters in western Iran and civilians carrying fuel in southeastern Iran. Iranian security forces carry out these shootings with impunity.

Iranian law requires armed forces to reduce the chances of death when using force.

Article 2 of the Law on the Use of Weapons by the Armed Forces in an Emergency states that law enforcement agents must have “complete control of their weapon” while Article 7 stipulates that they should “preferably target the legs to make sure it does not cause death or hurt third parties.”

Article 2 also requires the authorities to “take care of injured persons and transfer them to medical centers as soon as possible.”
