Iranwire – As the Covid-19 death toll rises in Iran, people aged between 40 and 60 are most at risk, an infectious disease expert in Tehran has warned.
The number of people over 60 getting the vaccine in Iran has increased in recent weeks, meaning middle-aged Iranians are dying from Covid-19 more than any other age group.
In an interview with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the head of the infectious disease department at Masih Daneshvari Payam Tabarsi noted that the coronavirus mortality rate among those who have received both doses of a coronavirus vaccine has decreased significantly, and emphasized the success of the vaccination roll-out for the elderly.
He also stressed that the World Health Organization had highlighted the effectiveness of vaccines around the globe, and that the organization encouraged people to get the vaccine when given the opportunity to do so. This applied to the full list of the vaccines the organization had approved.
Tabarsi acknowledged that the Delta variant was still posing a challenge, but that vaccines had meant most people contracting coronavirus were experiencing a milder form of the disease and needed to be hospitalized to a much lesser degree. Deaths from the virus were on the decline overall.
According to the latest statistics, in the 24 hours leading up to noon on Wednesday, 8 September, 884,000 doses of vaccines had been given to Iranian citizens. In that same 24-hour period, 635 people had died in Iran from Covid-19.
The total number of vaccines administered in Iran has exceeded 30 million doses.
According to Homayoun Sameih Najafabadi, a pharmacist who also represents the Jewish community in Iran’s parliament, black fungus infection continues to rise among coronavirus patients in Iran, and currently 500 people in the country have contracted the illness, which is also known as mucormycetes disease. The highly aggressive illness’ link to coronavirus was first identified in India in May. There have been several deaths in Iran linked to the condition.
