Iranwire – A young man who was arrested after the November 2019 protests and faces the death sentence in Iran is now seriously ill in prison, sources close to him have said.
Amir Hossein Moradi was just 25 years old when he was detained and put on trial for taking part in the nationwide demonstrations.
He and two others, Saeed Tamjidi and Mohammad Rajabi, were sentenced to death last June after being tortured into making false confessions.
The executions were put on hold but all three remained behind bars in Evin Prison. Last September, Amir Hossein’s father Nasser Moradi committed suicide.
Widespread denunciation by activists, social media users and human rights organizations eventually led the Iranian judiciary to refer the case back to the Supreme Court for a retrial. Finally, the case was sent back to the Revolutionary Court.
But on June 15 this year, Amir Hossein Moradi was transferred to the Tehran Police Investigation Center, raising fears that a new case is being prepared against him.
Activists have raised the alarm about his deteriorating health, which has been a matter of grave concern throughout his detention.
On Tuesday, June 29, the administrator of the Twitter account 1,500 Images, which is in contact with the families of people arrested and killed in the November 2019 protests, posted a stark warning: “Amir Hossein Moradi’s illness has recurred and he has been scarred all over his skin.
“He is sick whatever he eats, and has been taken to the hospital several times on a stretcher. He is in a critical condition.”
Amir Hossein suffers from psoriasis, which has been worsened by his detention and subjection to torture.
He is understood to not have received his usual medication since being transferred back into police custody. The retrial of the original case against him has been postponed three times.
