Nasrin Sotoudeh Returned to Prison Days After Heart Surgery

Iranwire – Human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh was yesterday returned to her cell in the notorious Qarchak Prison in Varamin.

It came just days the attorney, who has been jailed for 34 years for her defense of civil rights activists in Iran, underwent a heart angioplasty at Pars Hospital in Tehran.

Her husband Reza Khandan announced the news on Twitter, adding: “The conditions for prisoners in Iran are miserable, and are more difficult still for prisoners who are suffering from physical difficulties and illnesses.”

Nasrin Sotoudeh was released from Qarchak on medical leave on January 8. She had been transferred to this facility the previous summer as punishment for going on hunger strike in protest against conditions at Evin Prison in Tehran.

She has also previously spoken about rampant coronavirus infections at Qarchak, and tested positive for Covid-19 herself on being released.
