Iran Human Rights Director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: “In addition to the illegality of Alireza Alinejad’s sentence, the deprivation of his liberty and imprisonment for eight years for being related to Masih Alinejad is a crime against him and his young children.”

On 14 June 2020, Saeed Dehghan, Alireza Alinejad’s lawyer, tweeted that his client had been sentenced to eight years in prison by Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court. According to Dehghan, Alireza was sentenced to 5 years in prison for “assembly and collusion to act against national security”, 2 years for “insulting the leadership” and 1 year for “propaganda against the system”. The sentence is preliminary and can be appealed.

Alireza Alinejad is the brother of Masih Alinejad, an activist and journalist abroad. He was arrested on September 24, 2019, at his home in Babol and has been detained in Ward 2A of Evin Prison.

Iran Human Rights condemns the harassment of the families of civil society activists abroad by Islamic Republic officials and calls for an immediate end to these inhumane acts.
