Protesters Gathering In Tehran’s Revolution Square

Radiofarda – Videos circulated on social media show protesters gathering in Tehran’s Enghelab (Revolution) square on Monday.

While the exact reason for the protests is not yet clear, university students were holding demonstrations in Tehran’s Azad University on Saturday and Sunday demanding the resignation of top university officials after a student bus crash last week killed nine students and injured 28.

In Monday’s protest, slogans are being heard condemning “unqualified” officials and demanding their resignation.

It can also be heard that protesters are shouting “Don’t be afraid, we are all together”.

In the last days of December 2017, mass protests began in across Iran, which lasted almost two weeks and engulfed 100 cities. The protests which had started on economic issues soon turned into anti-regime unrest.

As Iran’s economy has entered a period of crisis, made worse by U.S. sanctions, Islamic Republic’s leaders, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have expressed concern about reoccurring protests.
