The two young women, 17, survived and were transferred to hospital.
Increasing pressure and restrictions on Iranian women and girls, and numerous restrictions imposed on them with regards to employment and social activities, has led to pervasive depression and despair among women and a high rate of suicide and suicidal attempts.
Iran ranks first in the Middle East with regards to women’s suicide.

In Spring 2016, an increasing trend of suicides committed in public caught the media’s attention. The first case was that of a 15-year-old girl from Tabriz who threw herself off the tenth floor of a building in Tabriz taking her own life.
Reports indicate that the suicide rate doubled in 2016 compared to 2015. The most common age of suicide is between 15 and 24 years. Every two hours and 18 minutes one person commits suicide in Iran.
