36,000 Children Married And 1,200 Children Divorced In One Year In Iran

Iran-HRM – Zahra Rahimi, the director of the Imam Ali Student Group, said that based on the yearly statistics of the National Organization for Civil Registration in 2015, there were 179 marriages of girls under the age of 10 and 36,000 marriages of girls aged 10 to 14 years registered in one year. According to provincial statistics, only in 2015, a significant number of girls under the age of 9 married in Hormozgān. In the same year, 1,200 children between the ages of 10 and 14 divorced.

“We had a case in Bushehr where no one accepted to register a marriage of an 11-year-old girl with a 40-year-old man, so the family registered the marriage in Kermanshah,” one of the members of the Imam Ali Group said.

Tayebi Siavoshi, a member of the Majlis Cultural Commission, also spoke of research that showed that in other countries, a type of cancer that women in their 60’s suffered from, affected 40-50-year-old women in Iran. According to this research, most of those affected in Iran were women who had married under the age of 15. “It’s unclear whether civil laws allow divorce for a child under the age of 18”, Siavoshi added.”How come someone cannot open a bank account until the age of 18, but has the right to the most important decision of his\her life and can marry under the age of 18”, she asked.
