IRANIAN COURT IN SAQQEZ ORDERS 50 LASHES AGAINST WOMAN

nrttv – An Iranian court has sentenced a young woman of Kurdish origin to prison and ordered her to receive 50 lashes as punishment for participating in an event recognizing the referendum on Kurdistan independence in northern Iraq.

Iranian court in Saqqez orders 50 lashes against woman Zamana Zewia, a student at Payam Noor University in Saqqez, was accused of “acting against national security,” “participating in illegal gatherings” and “disrupting public order,” Hengaw agency reported.

Zewia, acquitted from some charges, is still to pay 1.8 million toman (about 500$) as a fine and is set to receive 50 lashes in public for “disrupting public order,” the human rights advocacy agency in Iranian-Kurdistan said.

The court hearing against Zewia took place on fourth and fifth of November and Zewia and her attorney was notified about the verdicts after 11 days.

Zewia was sentenced to prison on December 15 on charges of provoking people to hold an illegal gathering and supporting the referendum on Kurdistan independence.

Three days after her arrest by Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, she was released on 80 million toman bail.

Iran is among the countries that had advised the Kurdish region to cancel the vote which took place on Sept. 25, worrying tensions between Baghdad and Erbil would distract from the war on Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
