A Prisoner Committed Suicid in Birjand Prison and Died

HRANA News Agency – A prisoner with drug related charges who had been kept in solitary confinement in Birjand prison since several months ago, committed suicide and died due to mental pressure of solitary confinement.


According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), A Baluch prisoner with drug related charges, committed suicide about two weeks ago and died in Birjand prison.

HRANA identified this prisoner as Mohammad Nohestani.

A close source to his family told HRANA’s reporter, “Mohammad protested against the lack of attention to the process of his case, as a result of which the authorities transferred him to solitary confinement”.

This source added: “after being kept in solitary confinement for more than three months, about 15 days ago he had enough of the pressure and harassment by the prison officials and committed suicide in prison cell and died”.

Birjand is the capital of South Khorasan province and according to national census in 2011 has a population of 178,020.
