Larijani Criticizes Iran’s Election Disqualification Process

Iranwire – A day after being barred from running in Iran’s presidential race, Ali Larijani criticized the Guardian Council’s “non-transparent” disqualification process.

Larijani, a former parliament speaker and current member of the Expediency Discernment Council, said in a statement addressed to the people that he had entered the election over concerns about Iran’s “dangerous” economic situation and sensitive domestic challenges, like the cruel sanctions impacting livelihoods.

“I was hoping that with your help we could remove the obstacles and provide the path for Iran’s national development,” the statement read.

“However, despite the positive opinions of the responsible institutions and the verdict of the judiciary, the honorable Guardian Council created a non-transparent mechanism that hinders the path of such cooperation.”

Despite the disqualification, he vowed that “our movement towards serving the people and solving the nation’s problems will not stop.”

Larijani, who previously served as an adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is among several prominent political figures barred from running in the June 28 early presidential election called after Ebrahim Raisi’s death.

In 2022, Canada imposed sanctions on Larijani, accusing him of participating in serious human rights violations against Iranian citizens, including women, and spreading misinformation to justify repression.
