Iranian Filmmaker Rejects ‘Money Offer’ from Presidential Candidate’s Campaign

Iranwire – Nik Yousefi, an Iranian photographer, filmmaker, and former political prisoner, has revealed an alleged attempt by Masoud Pezeshkian’s presidential campaign to offer money in exchange for participation in a meeting about Instagram filtering.

Nik Yousefi, an Iranian photographer, filmmaker, and former political prisoner, has revealed an alleged attempt by Masoud Pezeshkian's presidential campaign to offer money in exchange for participation in a meeting about Instagram filtering.

Yousefi shared on Instagram that he was invited to a meeting with “bloggers in specialized fields” to discuss “the effects of filtering on Instagram businesses.”

The meeting was to be attended by either Pezeshkian or Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, former Minister of Communications.

Jahromi, known for developing Iran’s national intranet and overseeing a ten-day internet shutdown during the 2019 protests, has been criticized for his stance on internet censorship.

Pezeshkian himself has stated that “in times of crisis, the internet should be cut off.”

Yousefi rejected the offer to join the meeting, stating, “There is no need for these extravagances… sit down and analyze that one week in November when you cut off all the internet, it’s enough to see what harm you brought to this country.”
