US Forces Intercepted Iranian Weapons Shipment To Yemen’s Houthis

Iranwire – The US military says it has seized an Iranian weapons shipment on a vessel in the Arabian Sea on January 28 that was destined for Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The shipment contained medium-range ballistic missile components, explosives, military-grade communication and network equipment, anti-tank guided missile launcher assemblies, and other devices, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on February 15.

“This is yet another example of Iran’s malign activity in the region,” said CENTCOM commander Michael Erik Kurilla. “Their continued supply of advanced conventional weapons to the Houthis is in direct violation of international law and continues to undermine the safety of international shipping and the free flow of commerce.”

The Tehran-backed Houthi rebels, who control much of war-torn Yemen, have been attacking vital Red Sea shipping lanes since November in a campaign they say is in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Their attacks have triggered reprisals by US and UK forces, including a fresh wave of US strikes on Houthi-controlled areas on February 14.
