Albania Blames Iranian-Backed Hackers for Cyberattack

Iranwire – The Albanian cybersecurity authorities have accused a hacker group “sponsored” by the Iranian government of attacking the Balkan country’s Institute of Statistics earlier this month.

The institute said on February 1 it had been targeted by a “sophisticated cyberattack” that affected some of its systems.

On February 13, the National Authority for Electronic Certification and Cyber Security accused Homeland Justice, “an attacking group sponsored by the Iranian government,” of the attack affecting 40 computers.

Iranian officials did not immediately comment on the claim.

The US authorities have identified Homeland Justice as “Iranian state cyber actors.”

The Albanian government has blamed the Iranian Foreign Ministry for a cyberattack in July 2022 that was thought to be in retaliation for Albania sheltering members of an Iranian opposition group.

The ministry denied it was behind that attack, which led Pristina to cut diplomatic relations with Tehran.
