Canada, Partners Take Iran to UN Agency over Downed Ukrainian Jet

Iranwire – Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Ukraine have filed a complaint with the United Nations aviation agency in their bid to hold the Islamic Republic of Iran accountable for the downing of a Ukrainian passenger airliner over Tehran four years ago.

“Today we have jointly initiated dispute-settlement proceedings before the International Civil Aviation Organization against the Islamic Republic of Iran for using weapons against a civil aircraft in flight,” the four nations said in a statement on January 8.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the move as “an important step in our commitment to ensuring that the families of the victims impacted by this tragedy get the justice they deserve.”

On January 8, 2020, Ukrainian International Airlines flight PS752 was hit by two missiles fired by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Forces (IRGC) amid heightened tension with the United States following the US drone assassination of top IRGC general Qasem Soleimani near Baghdad.

All 176 passengers and crew were killed. Most of them were citizens from Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Ukraine, which created a coordination group that seeks to hold the Islamic Republic to account.

Last year, the four countries took the Islamic Republic to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

The Iranian authorities attributed the tragedy to an “unintentional human error.”

On January 8, a group of victims’ families gathered at the site of the crash to commemorate their loved ones and condemn the Islamic Republic’s “fake trial” of those accused of being responsible for the incident.

Commemorations were also held in Toronto, Montreal, London, Paris, Berlin and Washington.
