The man behind Abbas Ali Suleimani’s killing was executed in Babol in the presence of the victim’s family, the Mizan News Agency reported on December 13.

The report said a court sentenced the man to death in May and the Supreme Court upheld the verdict.

Suleimani, 75, was shot in a bank in the Caspian city of Babolsar in April. Authorities offered no motive for the attack.

The killing followed months of anti-establishment protests across Iran and a bloody security crackdown on demonstrators. he protests, which were sparked by the September 2022 death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, gradually died down in the early months of the year.

Suleimani served on the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member chamber of theologians which oversees and appoints the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader.

He was previously the representative of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to the restive south-eastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

He also served as the Friday prayer leader of Kashan, in central Isfahan province, and Zahedan, the capital of Sistan and Baluchistan.
