Iran says Israel has not achieved its goals in Gaza war, truce a win for Palestinians

Al-Arabia – Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi said on Thursday that Israel had failed to achieve its objectives in the war with Hamas, and said that a deal to temporarily pause fighting represented a victory for the Palestinians.

“The Zionist regime has not been able to achieve its goals; they wanted to neutralize the resistance, but they could not,” Raisi said, referring to the Gaza-based Hamas and Islamic Jihad militant groups, according to state news agency IRNA.

Raisi said Israel’s actions in Gaza have only garnered “global hatred” for the country.

Commenting on the recent agreement between Israel and Hamas, the Iranian president said: “Now that the ceasefire has been announced, we can say that Palestine is definitely the winner of this conflict.”

On Wednesday, Israel and Hamas reached an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza lasting at least four days. Under the deal, the Palestinian militants would release at least 50 hostages taken during their October 7 attacks, and in return, Israel would free at least 150 Palestinian prisoners and allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza.

However, the deal’s implementation has been delayed, with Israel saying the truce and hostage release, initially expected to begin on Thursday, will not start until at least Friday.

Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas, which governs Gaza, in retaliation for its October 7 attacks. Israeli officials say the attacks killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and around 240 people were taken hostage.

Israel’s air and ground campaign has killed more than 14,000 people in Gaza, including thousands of children, according to authorities in the Palestinian territory.

Iran, a key source of financial and military support for Hamas, praised the October 7 attacks while denying any involvement in its planning or execution.

Tehran refuses to recognize Israel and has made support for the Palestinian cause a fundamental component of its foreign policy since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
