Iran Lagging Behind in Power Generation

Iranwire – Power shortages have become increasingly common in Iran, despite the country being among the world’s top crude oil producers.

A lack of investment in new capacity and plant maintenance leaves electricity production far below demand, forcing the authorities to regularly impose unannounced power cuts during the summer and the winter.

Increasingly frequent power cuts are not only impacting Iranian households but are also disrupting industrial production and services.

In a recent article, the collaborative initiative Iran Open Data pointed out that Iran is lagging behind the two other largest economies in the Persian Gulf region – the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia — regarding electricity production.

Saudi Arabia’s total power generation is 15 percent higher than Iran’s, it said, while Iranian electricity production is more than double the UAE’s.

Per capita power generation in Iran is about three times lower than in Saudi Arabia and more than four times less than in the UAE.
