“Bloody Friday” Anniversary: Iran’s Zahedan under Heightened Security Measures

Iranwire – Security measures are being stepped up in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchistan ahead of the first anniversary of Zahedan’s Bloody Friday massacre.

Zahedan is the capital of Sistan and Baluchistan, which is home to Iran’s Sunni Baluch minority of up to 2 million people.

The restive city has seen protest rallies almost every Friday since September 30 of last year, when security forces killed nearly 100 people in the deadliest incident in the widespread demonstrations sparked by the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

The authorities, fearing a flare up in protests ahead of the anniversary, are erecting embankments and digging ditches around Zahedan, according to Haalvsh, a group that monitors rights violations in Sistan and Baluchistan.

Military and security forces are also said to be increasingly controlling the residents’ movements by reinforcing checkpoints and stepping up their presence across the city.

According to reports, military forces from other provinces have recently been deployed to cities in Sistan and Baluchistan.
